Francisca Portugal is an independent curator and writer based between Lisbon and Berlin.

Her practice explores contemporary notions of friendship and empathy. She creates spaces for experimentation, discourse, and exchange, with a strong focus on informal networks and collaborative processes.

With an interdisciplinary background in Arts and Humanities, Portugal investigates how friendship intersects with curatorial practices, resulting in a diverse body of work that spans solo and group exhibitions, public programs, and talks across both independent and institutional contexts. Her recent projects reflect a growing interest in connections that extend beyond conventional exhibition formats, embracing process-oriented approaches and alternative art ecosystems. This has led her to devote much of her public programming to working with emerging artists and producing exhibitions in which she is engaged from inception to completion, sustaining meaningful, long term relationships with the artists she collaborates with.

Currently, Portugal is focused on researching archival methodologies, with particular attention to oral history. She has initiated a project that explores personal narratives as tools for historical inquiry, aiming to develop frameworks that challenge traditional models of documentation and historiography.
